For the second time in three days Hampshire’s batsmen had just had time to get into their stride when the rain came to halt them in their tracks. As in Friday’s T20 match against Middlesex, the weather forced this Clydesdale Bank 40 fixture against the Leicestershire Foxes to be rain abandoned with no opportunity for the opposition to bat.
It was a shame for two major reasons; first, opener Jimmy Adams was on well into his best knock of the competition so far, ending on 50 not out when the teams left the field for the third and final time; the Royals 89-1 after 14 overs.
Second, Hampshire had hoped to give a first CB40 start of the season to Imran Tahir, Hamza Riazuddin and Michael Carberry, as several regulars were rested in favour of trying out youth. In the end, none of the above saw anything other than the inside of the changing room.
The single point does little for either team, both of whom would require an incredible change of fortunes to qualify for the semi-finals anyway. Hampshire invite the Durham Dynamos to The Rose Bowl on Tuesday in the same competition, sitting in fifth place in Group B.
