Took over the captaincy of Chipping Sodbury back in the hazy days of 2005 when I returned as Club Captain and Coach. I always felt I would return to the club where it all began and after a long conversation (and several pints of real ale) with friend and chairman Andy Shield it felt like the right time.
2/ Is the role what you expected it to be?
Yes, the phone never stops, the abuse never ends and I don't see the missus between April and August.
3/ What is the most enjoyable part of captaining your club?
We get to empty Bobby's sack. Bobby, the team manager, has an ice cold sack (which consists of 24 ciders generally) that gets emptied after every win. To get all the boys together after we win and just talk cricket on the outfield is magic.
4/ What was your most memorable win at the club either as captain or before you took over?
Although we didn't win playing WEPL Premier 1 champions Frocester in the Gloucester Cup last year at The County Ground in Bristol was terrific. It was the first time the club has ever been involved in a game of that calibre and the players, fans and old stalwarts turned out in force. Superb.
5/ What is your main goal as captain?
Promotion to the Bristol & Somerset is up there. Continuing to blood our talented youngsters into the first X1. Last year on more than one occasion our first eleven average age was 24.
6/ How do you find the format of cricket that you play in your league?
We play in a 45 over win or lose which is fine. Never understood why the bowlers are not given 9 overs each maximum to make it a more fair, even battle.
7/ Who is the team badger and why?
Harry Webb. He keeps the badger in his shorts.
8/ What plans are in place as a club to ensure that the success of your side is sustainable?
A superb youth set up, top quality faclities and a cricket mad, cricket orientated committee.
Thanks for your thoughts Jay and good luck to you and the Chipping Sodbury lads.
