Keepers Count! Wicket-keepers are often the forgotten men at club or squad training. However, they are a vital part of every team, and can set the tone in the field with their energy and enthusiasm, as well as tidy up any wild throws or wayward bowling. It’s just as important for a wicket-keeper to have regular specific practice as it is for a bowler or batsman, and therefore they need to be practicing their skills in every session possible, and not just bowling off-spinners in the nets to make up the numbers! Over the next few pages, there are some simple drills you can use with your‘keepers to give them some quality practice, and make sure they are getting the attention that they deserve. If you’ve got several ‘keepers at a session then get them to work together, and they will learn off each other as they perform the different drills and discuss the techniques they use to catch all different deliveries. By setting up good quality and inspired training drills, they will start to develop their own techniques which will make them as effective as possible at catching as many balls as they can.
