With some of the rainfall that fell in Nottinghamshire early on Saturday, it was something of a miracle that any cricket was played in the Premier League but in the end two games were completed in reduced overs and one managed sixty-two overs before the match time ran out.
The top two sides saw no action as Clifton’s game at Mansfield Hosiery Mills and West Indian Cavaliers match at Caythorpe were both abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The two sides immediately below the leaders, Welbeck and Kimberley, met at the John Fretwell complex in a much-anticipated encounter. The start was delayed to until 3.45 pm and the game reduced to 35 overs per side; the visitors won the toss and elected to bat second and Welbeck may have thought that they had enough when they closed on 199 for six. Martyn Dobson scored 33 and Jonathan Ball 42 but the star of the show was Luke Waterhouse who ended unbeaten on 93, his best score in the league. Kimberley set about reaching their target but fell agonisingly one run short when time ran out after only 27 overs of their response. They ended on the same score for the loss of 5 wickets with Nick Langford lading the charge with 94 and Akhil Patel with 48; as the overs faced by each side were not the same, the result is an abandoned game with each side securing 12 points, six for the result and six bonus points.
Wollaton’s recent poor run of form continued when they lost at home to Cuckney by 4 wickets; with the game reduced to 36 overs a side, Wollaton batted first at the visitors invitation and posted 169 for the loss of 8 wickets. Tim Young continued his good form with an innings of 68 and Cuckney’s Dan Brown returned figures of 3-34. In another very close finish, Cuckney overcame their target for the loss of 6 wickets with three balls to spare with runs for Lucas Carlisle (41), Tom Ullyott (36) and Will Butler (30). Rhys Owen did his best to prevent the loss by taking three wickets for 34 runs. This result leaves Wollaton in ninth place in the table but now only 7 points ahead of Papplewick.
The result in the game between Kiveton Park and the Nottinghamshire Academy could not be considered as a close one as the county side ran out victors by nine wickets with more than 12 overs to spare. Home side Kiveton were invited to bat first and finished their innings on 170 for 4; Matt Cartwright again proved his worth to the side with an unbeaten 52 and he found a willing partner in Christopher Hadley with 59*. The Academy were not challenged in overcoming this total and got over the line in 22.5 overs despite the loss of leading batsman Tome Rowe at 21. The returning Scott Elstone (85*) and Olly Swann (65*) put on an unbeaten stand of 151 to grab a 17-point victory.
