The role of club captain is one that is extremely underestimated. Everyone sees the obvious responsibility of leading the club on the field but the role is a great deal more than that. At most clubs the captain will have an active role on the committee and be heavily involved in the running of the club alongside the chairman. Being extremely well organised is a must with the amount of administration that comes with ever game, from umpires reports to phoning results in. Some players may just think that turning up on a Saturday and playing is easy but that is the case because of the tireless efforts of the captain way before you even get to the ground!
On the field
Being a good leader is clearly a vital part of captaining any sports team. As cricket is a team sports, but incredibly individually driven, it is hard work to ensure everyone is happy, and in an amateur environment, getting a fair crack at the whip. Although winning is a big part of sport making sure people enjoy their Saturday afternoons can be a real juggling act.
