Preston Nomads - 2012 Sussex Premier League Champions

Preston Nomads Cricket Club 1^st team have won the Sussex Premier League this season to extend their run of consecutive silverware to five years.

Nomads lost just two league matches all season to win back the title they lost to Hastings & St Leonards Priory.CC last year.

West Indian veteran seamer Carl Simon once again played a key role, spearheading the attack for Nomads.

The 38-year old, who is in his 8^th season at Nomads, took 54 wickets in the league this season at an average of just 12.8.

1^st team vice-captain James McKemey cannot speak highly enough of the fast-bowler: “He’s world class, there are a lot of professionals in the league, but he is the best of the lot.”

But Nomads are certainly no one-man team.

It would be fair to say without the runs of Rob Wakeford (431) and Jeremy Green ( 344) the club would not have finished the season as champions.  

When available, Sussex batsman Joe Gatting also made an impact to the side scoring just shy of 200 runs in four matches.

 McKemey has also highlighted the influence of the team’s new faces as a factor towards their success: “Matt Hobden and Ian Simpson have definitely bolstered our bowling attack and have been excellent signings for us.”

Despite the team’s success in the league, their form in the cup this year has been disappointing.

An early exit in the National 50-over competition was followed by a Twenty20 defeat to Bexhill.CC in the league’s cup competition.

It is not only the players on the pitch that take all the credit for the clubs recent success.

Ranging from Nomads chairman Paul Hird to tea lady Jan Smith, it really has been a group effort to get the club to where they are now.

After another successful year for Nomads, McKemey reflects on the positive vibes around the club: “This team continues to be a group of mates who just so happen to be an exceptional cricket team. It is still a great joy and still a great honour to be part of it.”
