Gateshead Fell Cricket Club have signed Pakistan A batsman Shoaib Khan as their overseas professional for the upcoming 2012 season.
Khan has been in outstanding form in the Pakistan domestic campaign this winter, scoring 603 runs at an average of 67.
The 33-year-old said, “I am very thankful to the club’s committee in having faith in my abilities.
“I have heard about the strength of the league and am looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
Gateshead Fell treasurer Mark Lockey said he was “delighted to sign such a high quality player” and believes Khan will benefit the club in more ways than just runs.
“We are sure that Shoaib will prove to be a tremendous acquisition to the club, both on and off the field.
“He (Shoaib) comes with a vast amount of experience and we hope he can pass on some of his knowledge to our younger cricketers.”
Khan, who has had previous successful stints in the Irish, Bradford and Huddersfield leagues, is ready to settle into life in the North East and is looking forward to the start of a sibling rivalry with brother Zohaib who plays at Benwell Hill C.C.
“I am looking forward to making new friends, developing the players, raising our profile and playing cricket, hard but fair, especially against Benwell Hill!”
