Aftab Khan
Aftab Khan hit 172 not out for Burnham.CC at the weekend to become the LCA Batsman of the Week.
Khan scored the runs in the club’s 60-run defeat to league leaders High Wycombe.CC in the Home Counties Premier League.
In what was clearly great batting conditions, Alex Morgan (122) and High Wycombe captain Matt Eyles (105) both hit centuries to help the hosts to 315 for 5 off their allocated overs.
Chasing the daunting total, Khan out-scored both other match centurions in what was an excellent innings filled with free-flowing shots.
But unfortunately for the visitors, wickets fell regularly at the other end as Burnham fell short of the target.
45 from Adnan Malik provided some support for Khan, but it was James Benning who did most of the damage for High Wycombe finishing with figures of 5-53.
Burnham Director of Cricket Colin Davies believes Khan is an important player both on, and off the field: “It was an excellent performance from Aftab, it’s just a shame no-one could stay with him for long enough to get close to the total. He’s a real clubman as well, who spends a lot of time coaching the youngsters at Burnham, so it was great to see him to do well.”
With only one win to their name so far this season and sat in a relegation spot, Davies thinks it will be tough for Burnham to stay up: “If we can win about 5 games before the end of the season, we have a good chance of staying up, it’ll be hard but hopefully we have a few players coming back from injury soon which will give the team a lift.”
Burnham continue their league campaign as the club hosts Potters Bar.CC this Saturday (30th June).
