The Kirkstall pitch

A cricket club in Yorkshire got into the Olympic spirit in unique style last week.

The Olympic rings were cut into the outfield at Kirkstall Educational.CC by club groundsman David Hodgson.

The impressive cut soon went viral with a picture of the pitch being shared around social networking sites Twitter and Facebook.

Club Chairman Nick Davis says the success of Team GB, especially the competitors from Yorkshire, inspired the idea to come into fruition: “We were all in the clubhouse watching the first Saturday of the Olympics, celebrating the success of Jessica Ennis when someone suggested to David about cutting the Olympic rings into the pitch. Not too soon after, David took upon the challenge and here we are.”

After downloading images of the rings from the internet, it took Hodgson around three hours to complete the pitch.

Hodgson is well-renowned for the work he does at Kirkstall and has previously been shortlisted for the Groundsman’s Groundsman of the Year Award in the UK.

Hodgson also has a blog website which he uses to portray his experiences and opinions on grounds keeping and pitch care.

Davis feels the club benefits hugely from having such a dedicated groundsman: “The work of David helps us to boast one of the best club pitches in the county, and to have someone like David who takes such pride in their work is invaluable to a club like ours.”
