South Wilts 1^st team captain James Hayward has described the 2012 season as “Incredible” after the club won the Southern Premier Cricket League Division One.

The club won nine matches on their way to deservedly being crowned champions with Bashley.CC just under 3 average points adrift.

In the Southern Premier League, you are positioned in the table on your average points in matches throughout the season.

After being close to the title in previous years, Hayward felt his side had something extra this season: “For the last few years we always lacked a bit of that killer instinct. This year we just seemed to click and were winning games from positions where perhaps in the past we would have lost.”

Aside from an impressive 8-match stint from Australian Twenty20 international batsman Glenn Maxwell, Hayward feels it’s difficult to pick an individual who stood out from the rest: “Every single member of the 1^st team performed at some stage. I know there are a few key players who will probably feel they should have been more consistent but from my point of view then it is great to see everyone contribute.”

Alongside their excellent league form, South Wilts also had a gusty cup run in the National 50-over competition.

The team were eventually narrowly defeated in Round 5 of the competition by Bridgewater.CC.

Hayward feels the team were overwhelmed by the support shown for their cup fixtures: “The support we received at these matches was incredible. As amateur sportsman, playing in front of crowds of 300+ is an amazing experience.”

Off the field, James Hibberd & Tom Morton made an excellent impact on the team organising training, especially during pre-season.

Hayward is hopeful the team can now push on from this success for many years to come: “I think we have learnt a huge amount this year as a team and we will certainly be looking to progress as we move forward."
